March 8th was International Woman's Day. Afghan women have made great progress since the fall of the repressive Taliban regime in just three years. This is taken from an article written by Khorshied Samad, the former Kabul bureau chief and correspondent for Fox News and wife of the Afghan Ambassador to Canada.

"Afghan women are now leading the small-business revival throughout the country. At a recent awards ceremony honouring entrepreneurs who have successfully started small businesses with assistance of microfinance programs, 18 of the 23 recipients were women.

Access to media and other forms of expression are also on the rise, including radio stations run entirely by women. Hundreds of thousands of women have returned to work and to school to reclaim an education that was forbidden to them during the Taliban regime. More than 4 million children, one-third of them girls, have returned to school.

Its an astonishing record in a country where just over three years ago, women were noncitizens who weren't allowed to work or go to school.

However, poverty, malnutrition, poor health care, violence, illiteracy and forced marriage are mong the many challenges that still demand attention and require assistance from the international community.

Afghans have a life expectancy of 44.5 years, among the lowest in the world. The infant mortality rate is 115 per 1,000 births; in most western countries, the rate is fewer than 30 per 1,000 live births.

Although access to health care for women has improved, Afghanistan still has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world. Every 30 minutes a woman dies in childbirth without access to even a nurse. One child in five dies before its 5th birthday from diseases that are 80 percent preventable.

Another tragic situation has been the reporting of at least 50 cases of self-immolation among very young women in just last year and a half, protesting against their forced marriages to much older men.

Wages are extremely low: Civil servants, teachers and even doctors are lucky to receive between $40 and $100 per month. The Afghan population is said to be 70 percent illiterate and illiteracy amont rural women is estimated at 98 percent."

There is more to this article, first published in The Ottawa Sun, but i wont write the rest. It goes on to say that more money is needed from the international community for schools and so on.

Exuse me Khurram, but that article wasnt written by a western woman but by an Afghani woman, namely the wife of the Afghan Ambassador to Canada.

And nowhere do i say or insinuate any type of disrespect for women of different countries and cultures. International Woman's Day is to raise awareness of the injustices against women from all over the world, including the west.

Seems to me that you are too well aware of naked women from the west! Is that how you spend your free time? In your face babes!

And while im at it, what gives you the right to attack a society that you are living in?

That article was an information piece that i read in the newspaper today, nowhere am i attacking the morals of women. That article discusses education and health care for women. Nowhere does it discuss sex. But it seems that you have that on the brain!

Western culture? do you think western culture is based on sex and brothels????????????????????? the west wasnt even around when the middle east had prostitution, promiscuity and so on. hmmmmmmmmm, and where did the Kama Sutra come from? the West????????? i dotn think so. So dont give me your holier than thou attitude. It doesnt wash with me. You have no idea what western culture is like, you judge by what you see in splashy neon lights and in movies. Ignorance isnt reserved for western people only you know!

You took an article meant to be informative about the gains that women have made in Afghanistan and turned it completely around. There are injustices against women everywhere! This article was about something good that is happening.

But nevertheless, as a man, feel free to comment or add your thoughts here also. Just dont make me feel dirty because i come from the west, because thats exactly what you did. You paint a picture of western women that is horrible.

Khurram, that article does not say anything about eastern women. Please read it properly. It talks specifically about Afghani women, and no other. You got what you wanted out of that article, which was absolutely nothing and you put your own slant on it. Where it discussed the problems of education and health care, you discussed sex. I dont know how sex compares with education and health care, but then you are a man and you can interpret things anyway you want.

Case closed!

When Pakistani men dont want to discuss anything anymore, they all say, "Leave It!". ..................so Leave it!

i didn't read all that mumbo jumbo but i think that khurram does indeed spend his time looking at naked women of the west. However, i don't think its a wrong thing because if naked women of the east were as readily available on the internet he'd prefer to look at them more. However, this is just me, maybe i'm wrong, who knows!

this is for all the women out there reading this thread. And also since Khurram and Raza G read this thread, this is for them too!

Smile For You

Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu!
When someone smiled at me today, i started smiling too!
I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin
When She smiled i realized i passed it on to her!
I thought about that smile, then i realized its worth;
A single smile like mine could travel around the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin, dont leave it undetected.
Let's start an epidemic and get the workd infected.

How Smart is Your Right Foot?

This is so funny that it will boggle your mind.
And you will keep trying at least 50 more times to see if you can
outsmart your foot, but you can't.

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your
right hand. Your foot will change direction.

.....And there's nothing you can do about it!
